Itinerary day by day

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha
Upon landing at Kilimanjaro Airport, our dedicated driver will be ready to greet you. You’ll be transported to Meru View Lodge, situated in Usa River near Arusha. Take the remainder of the day to relax and prepare for your upcoming adventure. You may opt to explore the town of Arusha (taxi required). In the late afternoon, our Kilimanjaro team will meet you at the lodge for a briefing on your trek and to check your equipment.
Day 2: Arusha – Lemosho Gate (2,385m) – Big Tree Camp (2,780m)
In the morning, we’ll transfer you to Lemosho Gate (2,385m). Here, you’ll complete the necessary registration with the national park authorities, and your journey through a lush rainforest begins. Enjoy lunch before setting out on the forest trail. Today’s hike is relatively short, allowing you to savor the changing landscapes. Keep an eye out for thumbless colobus monkeys in the branches above. Your evening meal and overnight rest will be at the enchanting Big Tree Camp.
Day 3: Big Tree Camp (2,780m) – Shira Camp 1 (3,500m)
As you trek along the narrow forest trail, notice the vegetation gradually thinning out, leading to moorland adorned with lobelia and erica plants. Ascending through rolling hills, you’ll reach Shira Camp 1 in approximately 3 to 4 hours. From your camp, gaze upon the Shira Plateau, with the snow-capped Kibo summit as a backdrop. A hearty evening meal and a glimpse of the starry sky will conclude the day.
Day 4: Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) – Shira Camp 2 (3,900m)
Today, you’ll traverse Shira Ridge, characterized by rocky terrain, low grasses, and shrubs. With flatter terrain than the previous day, your hike will feel more relaxed, offering fantastic views of the Great Rift Valley and Mount Meru. Distinctive giant lobelias still dot the moor landscape. Trekking across terrain where lava once flowed, you’ll reach Shira Camp 2 for your evening meal and overnight stay.
Day 5: Shira Camp 2 (3,900m) – Lava Tower (4,640m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
After breakfast, your ascent to Lava Tower begins, leading through boulder-strewn terrain. In the distance, Kibo beckons you to continue uphill. Upon reaching Lava Tower, you’ll rest and allow your body to acclimatize to the higher altitude before descending to Barranco Camp. This strategy of climbing high but sleeping at lower altitudes aids acclimatization and provides valuable insights into your body’s response to altitude changes. Along the way, the landscape transforms once again, and you’ll be surrounded by giant senecios and smaller lobelias. After 6 to 7 hours, you’ll reach the picturesque and green Barranco Camp, offering splendid views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. After dinner, settle in for the night.
Day 6: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
After breakfast, prepare to conquer the famous Barranco Wall, possibly the steepest section of the entire route. While no technical climbing is required, some spots may require the use of your hands for better grip and support. Your guide will be nearby to assist as needed. Once you’ve navigated around Kissing Rock, you’ll journey along the mountain ridge and through the Karanga Valley, passing the last water source before reaching Karanga Camp. After a well-deserved meal, it’s time for a restful night.
Day 7: Karanga Camp (4,035m) – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Today, you’ll make your way to Barafu Camp. The landscape becomes dry, and the ground cracks beneath your boots. Trekking through the afro-alpine desert to the rocky Barafu Camp, you’ll sense excitement building as the final stretch nears. Barafu Camp offers a remarkable view of Mawenzi Peak and the summit path ahead. After an early dinner and last-minute preparations for the following day, retire for the night.
Day 8: Barafu Camp (4,640m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,080m)
Around midnight, you’ll be awakened with hot tea and biscuits to prepare for the day’s ascent. Ascending northwesterly through heavy scree toward Stella Point, you’ll arrive there in about 5 to 7 hours. At Stella Point (5,730m), take a rest if needed before embarking on another 1 to 2-hour stretch along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the pinnacle of your journey. Witness the breathtaking panorama from Africa’s highest summit, capturing it in as many photos as your camera allows. After a short break, begin your descent to Barafu Camp, where you’ll have time to catch your breath before descending to Mweka Camp, an approximately 3-hour trek away. A delightful dinner and peaceful night’s sleep await you.
Day 9: Mweka Camp (3,080m) – Mweka Gate (1,630m) – Arusha
Following a hearty breakfast and a traditional farewell ceremony with your mountain crew, commence your final descent to Mweka Gate. A leisurely 2 to 3-hour walk leads you through the lush rainforest, home to the endemic Impatiens kilimanjari flower. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll be greeted by our transfer driver, who will escort you back to Meru View Lodge. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure – take a long shower, go for a swim, or simply relax at the bar. Dinner and an overnight stay at Meru View Lodge.
Day 10: Arusha – Kilimanjaro Airport or Extend Your Adventure
After breakfast, you’ll be transported to Kilimanjaro Airport, or you can extend your holiday with an exciting safari or a beach stay.
