6 Days Trekking mount Kilimanjaro via Rongai

Short Overview

Discover the breathtaking beauty of Kilimanjaro through the less-traveled and captivating Rongai route, which approaches the majestic Kibo from the pristine north-eastern side. This extraordinary 6-day journey begins near the Kenyan border, offering you awe-inspiring vistas of the African savannah and the rugged Mawenzi. Along the way, you’ll encounter the only mountain lake within Kilimanjaro National Park, shortly after Mawenzi Tarn Camp. The route takes you through well-maintained trails that wind through fir forests, lush rainforests, and serene alpine deserts. While the Rongai route is generally considered one of the easier paths, it presents some rockier sections as you approach the summit. The descent follows the Marangu route, guiding you through the lush, verdant rainforest on well-marked pathways. Throughout this incredible journey, you’ll spend your nights in mountain tents, immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Kilimanjaro.

Itinerary day by day

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport – Welcome to Moshi
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, a warm Tanzanian welcome awaits you. You will be swiftly transported to Moshi, where you’ll have the rest of the day to unwind and prepare for your upcoming trek. In the evening, a comprehensive briefing will be held to ensure you are well-prepared for your adventure. You’ll spend the night at the comfortable Sal Salinero Hotel.
Day 2: Moshi to Nalemoru Gate (1,990 m) – Simba Camp (2,625 m)
After a nourishing breakfast, your journey begins with a scenic drive around the northern-western side of Mt. Kilimanjaro, eventually arriving at the Nalemoru Gate after 3 to 4 hours. Here, the registration process will take place, and your luggage will be skillfully distributed among the porters. Your adventure commences as the path leads you through mountain farmers’ fields and pine forests before entering the sparse mountain forest zone, where you may even spot black and white colobus monkeys. Following a 3 to 4-hour hike, you will reach the Simba Camp, where you’ll spend the night surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Kilimanjaro.
Day 3: Simba Camp (2,625 m) – Kikelewa Camp (3,630 m)
Today’s trek guides you through the enchanting heather and moorland zones, offering sweeping views of Mawenzi and the vast Kenyan steppes. A well-deserved lunch break awaits you at the Second Cave (3,450 m), followed by a journey across undulating terrain to reach the tranquil Kikelewa Camp. Here, you can relax and soak in the peaceful ambiance after a day of exhilarating ascent.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp (3,630 m) – Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,310 m)
As you continue your ascent, the characteristic senecien vegetation will gradually give way to a more barren landscape, punctuated by occasional rock formations. In favorable weather, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi summits, as well as Kenya’s sweeping savannah grasslands. After passing more remarkable rock formations, you will arrive at the Mawenzi Hut. For many climbers, this camp exudes a particularly captivating atmosphere.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,310 m) – Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
Today’s leg of the journey takes you over the Kibo Saddle on a relatively straightforward path. This landscape is characterized by its lack of vegetation, with only a few hardy grasses and plant species able to thrive in the arid, high-altitude conditions. Just before reaching today’s destination, you will navigate one final rocky passage. Finally, you’ll arrive at the Kibo Hut, where you can relax and mentally prepare for tomorrow’s summit stage.
Day 6: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,700 m)
The summit push commences around midnight, embarking on a 5 to 7-hour trek across frozen volcanic ash to reach Gillman’s Point (5,715 m) on the crater’s edge. As the sun rises, it will warm your spirits as you continue for another 1 to 2 hours until you stand triumphantly on “Africa’s Roof” at Uhuru Peak. The descent, now on thawed lava ash, retraces much of the same route, eventually leading you back to the Kibo Hut by late morning. Here, you’ll enjoy a well-deserved meal and a rest before descending further to the Horombo Hut.
Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,700 m) – Marangu Gate (1,860 m) – Return to Moshi
After a 5 to 6-hour descent, you’ll return to the Marangu Gate in the early afternoon. It’s time to bid farewell to your dedicated mountain crew. A short transfer will bring you back to the Sal Salinero Hotel, where you can rejuvenate with a warm shower and celebrate your remarkable achievement.
Day 8: Farewell or Extend Your Journey
Your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure concludes with breakfast, followed by a transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport. Alternatively, you can choose to embark on a thrilling safari or extend your stay by relaxing on the tranquil beaches of Tanzania.
